Sons of The American Legion
Detachment of Maryland
Children & Youth is one of the Four Pillars of The American Legion, and the Sons of The American Legion, Detachment of Maryland, proudly stand behind it. We are committed to supporting, protecting, and empowering our nation’s youth through hands-on programs that promote their well-being, education, and development.
The Detachment of Maryland proudly supports the following programs:
-
Special Olympics Maryland – Coordinated by Mitchell Matoska (130), this includes local events and participation in the annual Polar Bear Plunge fundraiser.
-
Toys for Tots – Led by Bob Gambill (22), squadrons collect and donate toys and funds during the holiday season to support children in need.
-
Casey Cares Foundation – Mark Fayer (135) serves as liaison to this organization, which supports critically ill children and their families with uplifting experiences.
-
Scouting America – Thomas Wertz (136) helps support squadrons working with local Scouting units to promote youth leadership, civic involvement, and service.
-
Laps of Love – Bobby Miller (40) leads this program, which supports these programs: Child Well-Being Foundation (CWF), Casey Cares and Maryland Special Olympics.
-
5-Star & 10 Ideals Programs – Coordinated by JR Hall (40), these foundational programs educate youth on Americanism, citizenship, discipline, and more.
-
Junior Shooting Sports – Overseen by Buddy Mastin (7), this program teaches safety, marksmanship, and responsibility to youth in a controlled and supportive setting.
We’re Building Tomorrow — Today
Our youth are the future of this organization. We encourage every squadron to actively recruit, involve, and inspire junior members. Whether organizing a service project, helping lead a flag retirement, or mentoring peers at camp, giving them space to lead helps them grow into strong Sons.
I look forward to working closely this year with our Maryland Detachment Junior Officer members and continuing to create meaningful roles for our younger members throughout the year.
Please don’t hesitate to connect with any of us at Detachment meetings or by email — we’re here to help.
On behalf of the entire committee, thank you for your continued support of our Children & Youth efforts across Maryland.
Together, we are…
Sons Honoring Veterans Every Day.
