On January 28, 2011, The American Legion Family of the Department of
Maryland participated in the Maryland State Police Polar Bear Plunge to benefit Maryland Special Olympics.
The group was lead into the water by: [Holding hands L to R]

& AL Department Commander Mike Mooney. Also pictured: SAL Detachment 1st Vice Commander Buddy Mastin, SAL Detachment Sgt-At-Arms

On October 13, 2010, members of the Detachment of Maryland attended a dinner meeting in Annapolis
with Md. State Secretary of Veterans Affairs Edward Chow. Pictured above [L to R] are Legislative Chairman Bill
Stem, First Vice Commander Buddy Mastin, Secretary Chow, Detachment Commander Tom Deal and VA&R Chairman J.R. Hall. The
Secretary is a strong supporter of the SAL and commended the Detachment on our support of programs that benefit our veterans.
He also gave attendees insight into the workings of his office and our state government. The secretary backs our push
for slots for service organizations throughout the entire state and has offered his assistance when appropriate.
He also echoed our call to “get out the vote”.

On March 27, 2010, the Sons of The American Legion Detachment of Maryland received the
Casey Cares Foundation's "Champion of Children Award" for their outstanding support assisting Casey Cares in
providing uplifting programs to critically ill children and their families. Accepting the award from Casey Cares Founder and
CEO Casey Baynes were Past Detachment Commander Larry "Bear" Weinzirl and Past National Commander Bill Sparwasser. The award
was presented at the Casey Cares Foundation's 10th Annual Gala.

Detachment 2nd Vice Commander
Buddy Mastin pledged that if he raised $2,500 by January 30, 2010, to participate in the Polar Bear Plunge for Maryland Special
Olympics, that he would shave his head.
Buddy raised over $3,500
and, with the assistance of Detachment Adjutant and Past National Commander Bill Matoska, made good on his pledge.

On January 12, 2010, Commander Mark Gilbert, 1st Vice Tom Deal and Legislative Chairman Bill
Stem met in Annapolis with the new Md. State Secretary of Veterans Affairs Edward Chow. Secretary Chow is a Vietnam Vet and
a Member of Post #1 in Washington State. The meeting lasted about an hour and included discussion of current veterans'
legislation. Secretary Chow was found to be very informed about the S.A.L. and a strong supporter. Commander Gilbert feels
that this should be the start of a very rewarding relationship and invited Secretary Chow to our 2010 Detachment Convention
as a special guest.

Jeff Davis Squadron #18 was the distribution point for the tri-county area. Over 5000 toys were distributed to needy families.

5th Annual Ride for Casey Cares
July 25, 2009
On July 25, 2009, the SAL Detachment of Maryland held their
5th Annual Ride to benefit the Casey Cares Foundation.
The Casey Cares Foundation provides uplifting programs with
a personal touch to critically ill children and their families.
This year's ride raised over $5,100 for this
truly special charity.

Detachment Commander's Homecoming
July 19, 2009
On July 19, 2009, Overlea-Perry Hall Squadron 130
hosted a casual Homecoming get together
for newly elected Detachment Commander Mark Gilbert.
This get together was well attended by many members
of the Maryland American Legion Family
including 9 Past Detachment of Md. Commanders.
