The Americanism Commission will, as in years past,
continue to support all Legion Americanism programs. For administrative year 2010-2011, the Detachment of Maryland had 62,099
volunteer hours and made donations totaling $168,741 to Americanism programs.
Following are just a few of the programs that
chairmen have been assigned to. We encourage each squadron to participate in those programs that work best for your squadron.
NEF The
National Emergency Fund needs our help. In recent years many members of our Legion family have received some much needed assistance
from the N.E.F. In order to continue this aid for our members in the present and near future, Chairman Larry Griffin is
asking each squadron to donate at least $1.00 per member. I believe this is a very obtainable goal for the great Detachment
of Maryland.
Community Service Past Detachment Commander Andy
Dadds is calling on all volunteers for work days /cookouts at Fisher House. If you can help out, it will be a rewarding
experience. Don't forget to include Fisher House when making out squadron donations. Your squadron can also assist
with community Blood Drives, the Adopt-A-Highway program, Boys State and Girls State among many others.
Flag Replacement/Placement Program The Detachment of Maryland will present awards to the top two Squadrons for their
support of the Flag replacement program. Same rules apply as last year, make sure that the size of the replaced flag is indicated
on the replacement form (3x5 flags will count as 5 points and smaller flags will count as 1 point). Additional details
on the awards will be disclosed during an upcoming DEC meeting. Chris Dadds is the Chairman for this Commitee.
Five Star/Ten Ideals Program For anyone wanting to take the Five-Star test, we will have certified judges
at all Detachment meetings or we will be happy to make arrangements to meet at your Post. Contact Past Detachment Commander
Mitch Gilbert at 443-286-2629 for assistance.
